You are invited to come with us on a walking tour through our historic centre. We will show you the places of interest and we will let you know about the secrets of our city’s history. You will see the monumental witnesses of former centuries, like Holsten Gate, town hall und St Mary’s church. St Mary’s was the church of the prosperous merchants and citizens of the town. As “mother of gothic brick style” it became exemplary to many churches along the Baltic coast.

You start from the Holsten Gate. What does “Concordia Domi Foris Pax” mean? How thick are the walls of the towers? Why does the building incline? How many gates belonged to the complete bulwark? All these questions out of more than 800 years of history will be answered during your sightseeing tour.
From here the tour will pass the Salt Warehouses, where the “white gold” was stored. In Gr. Petersgrube you will get a short impression of the inside of a typical merchant house. Nowadays it belongs to the international Conservatoire, which is a complex of 22 historic buildings. On it goes to St Peter’s, one of the old churches in town. From St Peter’s you will go to the market place where the imposing town hall mirrors the spirit of the “Hanseatic League”
The town hall forms a closed bond with St Mary’s, the biggest church in town. It will be worth your while to get a very close look at this high gothic basilica. After you have been inside it is only a short walk to the Buddenbrook House, St Katharine’s church and to the Hospital of the Holy Ghost. The hospital is one of the oldest social establishments of northern Europe. From its beginning at the end of the 13th century it has been a home for old people and it still is. Further on you will walk through one of the alleyways, which are as much a part of the City as the monumental buildings.
